Woven Textiles Are All the Rage

In years previous, it was only the fall and winter months where you could find woven textiles. Jackets and coats for men and women, as well as suits and blankets were what we could count on finding in the stores. Woven fabrics ranged from man-made fibers such as polyesters and acrylics, to natural fabrics such as wools, cottons and silks. The fabric patterns were always the same – hounds tooth, tweed, argyle and tartans were the most available choices. Styles were updated yearly, however always safe and somewhat reserved. Most woven fabrics were made from large manufacturing machines, and then sold in large bolts for everyone. Imported hand twilled woven fabrics usually came in the form of blankets, runners, rugs, and other household textiles.

These days, everything has changed. Yes, there still exist the woven textiles, patterns and styles of the past. However, there are many more options than ever before. Hand woven textiles from North American weavers, as well as international weavers, seem to have crossed the great design cue, and have created a new set of rules in weaving. New man-made fabrics and textiles as well as old world natural fibers have been introduced. A multitude of different fabrics such as rayon, jerseys, hemps and rare wools have jump started the creative juices of the 21st century craftsperson. Weavers, designers and stylists are always searching for something new, to introduce to the textiles and fashion market. This seems to be their time.

The styles of the 21st century reflect the fashions of the 20th century with woven twilled bolero jackets, wide leg tweed pants, ¾ length arm lengths, long gloves, fitted coats, and tunics. Now, all with a new twist in fabrics weaves and colors. Some fashions have changed as well as stayed the same. There are still beautiful textiles from South America, Eastern Asia and Africa. However, the color choices, and fabrics have evolved to include other influences, and rules are no longer set in stone. Globalization also affects culture and styles and is now having an influence in creating something new and unique in woven textiles. That is the new world in woven textiles, not everything old should be new again. Creating something unique and irreproducible is not an easy feat, but the challenge seems to be expanding and evolving, to the betterment of all of us.

Spinning & weaving your own textiles has become popular once again, and why not? With the tough economic times and the cost of textiles, weaving and spinning are not only a great craft with historic importance, but also a useful and beautiful art. Weaving your own textiles allows you to create your own custom patterns, combining colors and unique designs. Weaving instruction and classes are available from many sources including community colleges and private studios. Some of the biggest loom manufacturers are Louet North America, Schacht Spindle Co. Ashford, and Leclerc Looms & Harrisville.

But our favorite loom, is the “Jane Loom” from Louet North America which is a significant improvement on the very popular Louet Kombo Loom. A really fine table top loom for anyone from beginner to expert.

Nicole Richie: declared ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Glamour, at the Women of the Year awards (London), has newly defined herself as a celebrity designer.  Moving from a long-run television series into the world of fashion designers, Nicole continues to prove herself.  With her trendy bohemian look and her costume jewelry creations, the woman continues to create products that sell.

Adopted daughter of Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey, Nicole was interviewed even in her toddler years.  Later, starring in the hit television series, The Simple Life (1-5), Nicole’s popularity grew in the public eye.  Working with childhood friend and Hilton heiress, Paris, magazines flocked to get a glimpse of Richie’s personal life.  Under the radar, Nicole developed lines of clothing, accessories, and jewelry.  This hip star isn’t stopping there.  She plans on starring in a television sitcom in the near future, as well as continuing to awe fashion magazines with her own vintage looks.  Richie states, “I’m a big vintage shopper… The beauty of anything vintage is that you’re not going to see lots of other people in the same thing.  I like to be different.”

House of Harlow 1960 is a jewelry line created collaboratively by both Mouawad and Nicole Richie.  The line debuted online in 2008.  Nicole named her stitch of creativity after she and Joel Madden’s child, Harlow.  Celebrities such as Madonna and Ashley Simpson have been seen wearing the jewelry in and out of their stage and daily lives.  The pieces include feathers, gold plating and numerous fabric types.  Nicole says, “You could be wearing jeans and a t-shirt and just throw on one of those pieces. – Easy. It reflects my personal style.”  

Beyond that of jewelry, the star has now added some sheik shoes and perfume varieties to her line.  The mother of two is additionally planning on creating: sunglasses, shoes and accessories for children in the near future. “Becoming a mother hasn’t changed my style,” Nicole says.

This year, Richie has moved her jewelry into a vision consisting more of a retro look.  The clothing includes that of:  vests, jackets, and even kimonos.  Fabrics in both the jewelry and clothing lines this summer have artfully included: crêpe, silk chiffon, fringe and embroidery.  Nicole explains, “… fashion is really fun and I think you just have to have fun with it – and experiment with different looks.  It’s the fun part of being a girl…”  

When not creating media-worthy clothing and accessories, Nicole donates her time to the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.  This charitable organization, started by Nicole Richie, and beau Joel Madden, gives clothing, needed goods and hope to children worldwide.  The organization also provides unique entertainment for children in need, filling their lives with smiles and laughter.

Nicole Richie has done much for the better of human kind through her works, and continues to inspire young individuals to care for a cause.  The fashion world looks forward to what she will produce next as a leading celebrity designer.  With a wide spectrum of talent, who knows what this diva will turn into gold next?

About Pashmina

A textile made from a kind of fine cashemere wool is known as Pashmina. This fibre is also termed as ‘pashm’. The fine cashemere wool is obtained from the underbelly of the changthangi or Capra Hircus goat or pashmina goat. Pashmina goat is a goat breed which resides in the high altitudes of Himalayas.  Hence, they have a thin inner coat of wool which protects them from the bad Himalayan winters. This inner coat of these goats is collected and spun to generate Pashmina. But for the collection of this inner coat of wool the goats are not harmed as the wool is gathered only when it is naturally shed.

Blends of Pashmina

There are several pashmina shawls manufacturer in India. These manufacturers utilize a softening process of the 100% pashmina products, which softens the pashmina and gives it a silken feature. At times Pashmina is a mixture of pure pashmina wool and silk. The blend of 70% pashmina and 30% silk is the most famous textile while, 50% pashmina and 50% silk is common. This mixture of pure pashmina wool and silk offers durability to the pashmina and is very soft and light weight. Strength and luster is added to the cloth by silk. Therefore, more the content of pashmina wool in a textile, more expensive the textile would be. Generally, there are two kinds of silk fiber which are used. They are 140 and 210. Silk is added in different amounts.

The textile pashmina is also termed as the diamond fabric and the soft gold of high Asia due to its exceptional softness and soothing warmth. Pashmina is considered to be the best, softest and the warmest textile accessible anywhere. The unique feature of Pashmina is that the textile becomes still softer and comforting with every use.

Accessories of Pashmina

There are several accessories made up of Pashmina available. Some of them are scarf, stole or Pashmina shawl. Pashmina shawls are generated from fine cashmere fibre and are hand spun and embroidered in Kashmir. Outstanding weaving skills are required to weave this delicate Pashmina shawls. To produce one pashmina shawl, the wool from three goats are required.

Difference between Cashmere and Pashmina

Pashmina and cashmere are two different textiles which are generally mistaken as the same, as fibers for both the textiles are acquired from the same goat. As compared to cashmere, Pashmina is finer, light weight and more comforting than cashmere. The thinness of cashmere fiber is not less than 19 microns in diameter, while the thinness of pashmina is in the range of 14-16 microns.

Care of Pashmina

Proper care of your pashmina should be taken. Pashmina is best recommended to be dry-cleaned or should be washed by hand. It can also be washed on a protective delicate wool machine. Pashmina should be carefully ironed or steam pressed to remove the creases. Mild fulling of pashmina is advisable to soften it further. Use a non-alkaline mild wool detergent.  The pashmina should be rolled in a towel after washing, in order to absorb moisture.  To protect your pashmina against moths, you must store them in drawers with cedar blocks.

It should not be put in a tumble dryer. Avoid the use of soap to clean your pashmina as the alkaline pH value of soap can lead to permanent damage to your textile. Excessive fulling, soaking, pulling and scrubbing can ruin your pashmina.
